Zaccaria Urges Democrats to Oppose Suit

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Friday, Republican Mark Zaccaria, candidate for Congress in the Second Congressional District, called on fellow Republican and Democratic leaders to call for the withdrawal of a lawsuit filed by the Rhode Island American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) against a Cranston School District concerning a mural that promotes citizenship, honesty and generosity.

“What has become of this country when an innocuous banner which asks students to strive to do their best somehow infringes on someone’s Constitutional rights?” asked Zaccaria. “The ACLU is bullying a school district into striking down a banner that is grounded in faith and encourages students to be good citizens through action and humility. This is an abomination and a cynical use of the courts to no useful end.”

The complaint was filed by the mother of a student who attended an event at Cranston High School West. The mural has been displayed in the hallway for half a century.

Zaccaria said the salutation and valediction are totally proper and do not compel any student to follow a religious belief or any other spiritual path. He said all elected leaders in the state should call upon the ACLU, its board to ask they pull their lawsuit so the school board, its teacher, parents and students can return this fall without fear of spending thousands of dollars in legal fees.

The Cranston School Board, like many others in the state, faces a $6 million budget shortfall.

Zaccaria said the worst part of the lawsuit is that the plaintiff doesn’t even attend the school.

“Whose rights are being violated?” asked Zaccaria. “Apparently, the only people upset are the lawyers who are eager to make a case to placate a narrow-minded group whose whole purpose in life is to destroy the fabric of the country.”

Mark Zaccaria is a resident of North Kingstown, RI, where he runs a small business. He and his wife, Ruth, have been married for 35 years. They have three grown children who are all residents of the state. Learn more about Mark’s candidacy for congress at the web site: www.zaccariaforuscongress.com

Langevin Again Spends Money We Don’t Have

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Today Mark Zaccaria, Republican candidate for Congress, sharply criticized his opponent, Congressman Jim Langevin, for a recent vote in support a bill creating another multi-billion dollar slush fund.

The bill, H.R.5297, creates a $30 Billion government lending fund which will be administered by the U.S. Treasury. The bill passed the House by a 241-182 vote on June 17th.

“We have got to stop spending money we don’t have! I know from the inside how small business works. Why create a $30 Billion slush fund when you could give a $30 Billion tax cut to small businesses and help everyone out? We shouldn’t be singling out particular industries when all Rhode Islanders are feeling the economic pains,” said Zaccaria. “Everyone should know that giving the federal government yet another multi-billion dollar allowance will result in inefficient use, if not misuse of that asset. We cannot condone such tunnel vision at such a critical economic moment.”

Zaccaria went on to illustrate the lack of independent thinking from his opponent.

“Mr. Langevin’s vote in favor of this bill is yet another case of his blind devotion to Speaker Pelosi,” Zaccaria said. “It’s impossible for Mr. Langevin, who votes with his party 99.2% of the time, to provide the people of Rhode Island with the independent voice and leadership that we expect from our elected officials. Mr. Langevin can continue to be a pawn of his party; I will be beholden to the will of the people.”

Zaccaria Responds to Langevin Announcement

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Today Mark Zaccaria, Republican candidate for Congress, responded to the expected news that his opponent, Congressman Jim Langevin, would seek re-election.

“I welcome Mr. Langevin into the 2010 race, and I hope that this time, unlike in 2008, he will be open to multiple public debates in which the issues can be discussed in front of the voters,” said Zaccaria. In 2008, Langevin ignored numerous requests from Zaccaria to engage in public debates, eventually agreeing to a single radio debate. “I’m sure he will spend the next three months ducking any debates with Ms. Dennigan and spend the Fall refusing to debate me. If he is so proud of his record, why is he afraid to defend it in a public debate?”

Zaccaria went on to disagree with some of the comments made by Langevin in the recent article in the Providence Journal.

“Mr. Langevin is right that people are tired of partisan politics,” Zaccaria said. “But I find it laughable that he would describe himself as ‘non-partisan’. Langevin has been the most reliable vote for Speaker Pelosi, voting the party line about 98 percent of the time. If he doesn’t see that as being partisan, then he is delusional. Rhode Island cannot afford to allow Mr. Langevin and Speaker Pelosi to continue to put people out of work and drive businesses out of this country while catering to their special interests.”

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Mark Zaccaria, republican candidate for Congress, responded today to the AFL-CIO Executive Board’s unanimous endorsement of Jim Langevin.

“The message this endorsement sends is clear,” said Zaccaria. “George Nee and the AFL-CIO board did not vote with the best interests of union members in mind; their decision was based upon which candidate will be the easiest to keep in their back pocket.”

The Executive Board of the Rhode Island AFL-CIO, representing over 80,000 union members across the state, met on Monday, April 19th and unanimously voted to endorse Representative Langevin’s bid for re-election to Rhode Island’s Second Congressional District seat in the November 2010 elections.

“Union members are working people, just like me, who must find ways to make their mortgage payments and pay their property taxes, things that George Nee and Jim Langevin are simply not worried about,” Zaccaria said. “As a former AFL-CIO member and a small business owner, I understand the real needs and concerns of the people on Main Street. Mr. Langevin and the AFL-CIO leadership have demonstrated that they have completely lost touch with Main Street America. By ignoring my message, Mr. Nee has ignored the will of the people, including his own union members. I look forward to meeting with many AFL-CIO members over the coming months and demonstrating how we can work together to create a better future.”

On a recent trip to Washington, D.C., Mark Zaccaria sat down with John Gizzi, White House Correspondent and Political Editor of Human Events, to discuss the race in Rhode Island’s Second Congressional District. Here is an except from the article by Gizzi:

One of ‘Stupak Dozen’ Under Fire in Little Rhody

As the only paraplegic in Congress, Democrat James Langevin is a national figure. The former Rhode Island secretary of state (who was injured in a accident with a gun while a youngster) is a recognized spokesman for disabled Americans and his record of voting the liberal line on spending while remaining pro-life has been enough to make Langevin a fairly safe incumbent in Rhode Island’s 2nd District.

Not so after the healthcare vote. Langevin was widely considered one of the “Stupak Dozen”—the 11 House Democrats, along with Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) who were considered “in cement” against voting for a healthcare bill that did not include an airtight ban on tax funding for abortion such as that contained in the measure that passed the House in November.

“Actually, my opponent was one of the original Democrats who said he wouldn’t vote for a bill without the ban. He was before Stupak,” Republican nominee Mark Zacaria told three HUMAN EVENTS reporters over lunch last week, “And they all turned out to be sheep led by the leadership into voting for a bill without the ban they said was critical.”

In a district with a strong Roman Catholic population, Langevin’s slavishly going along with Nancy Pelosi and the other liberal House Democratic leaders is clearly working against him. Moreover, the Ocean State has the second-highest unemployment rate in the nation (Michigan is first) and this has translated into anger over the Administration’s weak economic policy and support for U.S. Air Force veteran and small businessman Zacaria.

As the Republican nominee against Langevin two years ago, Zacaria drew less than 40% of the vote in a campaign he freely admits was under-financed and poorly run. This time, the GOP hopeful has a crack professional team in his corner and, over the weekend, 20 Zacaria volunteers were in the field canvassing more than 500 households.

“And you bet the Tea Party movement is strong here!” Zacaria told my colleagues and me , “9 to 12, and the different ‘Tea Party’ groups had large rallies even before the healthcare vote and I try to speak to as many as I can.”

With no Senate seat up, the race for the House will have the top ballot line in Rhode Island., making the race between James Langevin and Mark Zacaria particularly well- worth watching.

Rhode Island Republican Chairmen Endorse Mark Zaccaria

At a meeting of the Rhode Island GOP Chairman’s Caucus in Hope Valley yesterday the group unanimously endorsed 3 Republican candidates for the 2010 election. Phil Hirons, who serves as the Chairman of the Chairman’s Caucus, made the announcement after the meeting. Among the endorsements was an endorsement for Mark Zaccaria as the 2010 Republican Candidate for U. S. Congress District 2.

Michael Napolitano, Chairman of the Lincoln Republican Town Committee and spokesperson for the group stated “Mark is an U. S. Air Force veteran. His record as a former North Kingstown Town Council member proves his commitment to the ideals of the Republican Party. He has demonstrated his belief in lower taxes, a strong military, the need for national security, and smaller government. He recognizes the need to eliminate Earmarks in congress. He believes in enforcing our immigration laws and opposes bureaucratic mandates. He understands that we must stand for traditional values and for Republican ideals. Mark has been an active participant in the Republican Party and has stood tall against Democrat incumbents that do not agree with our message.”

The Rhode Island GOP Chairman’s Caucus is the coalition of the 39 city and town Chairmen which represents the grass-roots local leaders of the state GOP. Among other things, the Chairmen’s Caucus raises money; and helps veteran Chairs mentor newer Chairs on practical political activities of local Parties.

Words Have Meaning, but Actions Have More

President Obama’s speech to the nation on Thursday, January 7th, 2010, contained a great deal of right-sounding oratory. He spoke at last of Terrorism and he identified Al Qaeda as the enemy when he said perhaps the most important words of his administration thus far: “We are at war.”

I congratulate the president on his forthright and direct assessment of global politics. It has taken a while for him to acknowledge that fact publicly. That he’s now done so indicates a shift in Mr. Obama’s position, and it is one I consider positive on two levels. First, he has acknowledged reality and as a result he’s forsaken a long held illusion that an open hand will be greeted in return by another. Second, he has begun a demonstration to both the nation and its adversaries that America can be pushed only so far.

Terrorism is a strategy of provocation that depends on triggering reprisals. Our enemy in the Christmas Day attempt on Flight 253 will measure its success by what kind of response it elicits. President Obama is learning that he has several audiences as he reacts to this attack. He will be graded by Americans who are seeking reassurance and leadership. He will be closely watched by our enemies who want the dramatic worldwide press they crave as validation of their accomplishment. He will be analyzed by allies and non-aligned countries, alike, as they try to decide which America they are about to see taking the field.

The President of the United States is an executive, though. An executive is one who does something, who accomplishes some stated goal. President Obama’s words were a good start but he now has to follow them with action. Terrorism is intended to impact public opinion. For that very reason the actions the president takes to back up his words will be best if they are invisible to the press and the worldwide public. American retaliation will be most effective if it physically punishes our enemy while also denying them any sympathy that might be the by- product of much publicized military action.

Mark Zaccaria knows that illegal aliens living in America consume precious resources that are intended for its citizens. He also knows that our country cannot afford to allow an underground of illegal aliens who are not integrating, assimilating and becoming citizens of our great country.

We are a nation of immigrants and those that come here seeking citizenship will follow our laws. Today’s illegal alien problem revolves around foreigners who come here only to get money. The longer we leave that economic incentive in place the bigger the problem will become.

Here’s Mark’s plan: Enact a Guest Worker’s program that is easy for foreigners to apply for and that will give them documentation to work for Nine Months very quickly. Then they’ll be covered by Workman’s Comp and they’ll pay regular withholding taxes when they work. At the same time institute E-Verify nation wide, with real penalties for scofflaw employers who hire under the table.

The Three Months per year that Guest Workers have to spend at home will strengthen families who depend on their income. It will also give US Authorities time to decide if each worker qualifies to come back for a second Guest Worker’s cycle. Illegal aliens already here will soon begin to realize they can’t get the work they came for unless they sign up. They’ll begin to migrate back home where they apply to return with heads held high.
